GBSLEP Growth Hub: How we made a content heavy site user-friendly and interactive

When we were tasked with designing and building a knowledge bank solution to provide first-class business advice, funding and support services across the Greater Birmingham and Solihull area, we knew this meant one thing. Content – and lots of it.

But content is no bad thing – the phrase ‘content is king’ is widely recognised in marketing and means that by producing lots of high quality content of value to your reader, they will be more likely to engage with your brand and thus return to your website.

With the combined hard work of our creative and programming teams, we were able to build a navigable, slick and interactive website full of content that was presented in a visually appealing and branded format. Building the site was an extensive process, however we have pulled together four distinctive ways that we were able to make it both user friendly and interactive:

  1. Planning – We started by creating an in-depth site map detailing what pages would appear where across the site
  2. Navigation – We were then able to build a comprehensive and user-friendly navigation system on the website so that users could find one of the many pages in a logical and systematic format. We also incorporated images and text into the navigation for enhanced accessibility.
  3. Third party integration – With our third party integration work, we were able to pull content from major websites onto the GBSLEP Growth Hub site, such as HMRC and Gov.uk, without the user having to leave our site, offering a seamless experience.
  4. Responsive design – We used responsive design to that the GBSLEP website offered mobile functionality and appeared slick and interactive for the user on the go, looking to find information quickly and at the tap of a screen.
